In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Chapel Plaster like this:

CHAPEL-PLASTER, a place 3 miles SW of Corsham, in Wilts. It was, in the Romish times, a resting place of pilgrims on the way to Glastonbury Abbey; and, in last century, the retreat of the notorious highwayman, John Baxter.
