In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Charlton like this:

CHARLTON, a hamlet in wantage parish, Berks; adjacent to the Berks and Wilts canal, near the Great western railway, 1 mile NE of Wantage. Real property, £2,708. Pop., 255. Houses, 53. The hamlet forms a curacy with Wantage, in the diocese of Oxford; and is a meet for the Vale of White Horse hounds. Charlton House belonged once to the Wilmots; was visited in their time, by Charles I.; and passed to the Freemans.
