In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Loftsome like this:

LOFTSOME, a hamlet in Wressell parish, E. R. Yorkshire; on the river Derwent, 3¼ miles NW of Howden. Pop., 20. A bridge here was built about the be ginning of the present century, and is of such construction as to allow vessels to pass.
