In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Saltoun like this:
Salton, par., Haddingtonshire, on river Tyne, 3812 ac., pop. 575; the church is at East Salton, vil., 3½ miles SE. of Winton ry. sta. and 6½ miles SW. of Haddington; 1 mile SW. of East Salton is West Salton, vil.; P.O.; Salton Hall, seat, is 1 mile NW. of East Salton.
