In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Snizort like this:

Snizort, Loch, sea-loch, in NW. of Skye island, Inverness-shire; enters from the Little Minch, separates the districts of Trotternish and Vaternish, and is 14 miles long and from 1 to 9 miles wide.
