In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newbiggin like this:
NEWBIGGIN, a township in Aysgarth parish, N. R. Yorkshire; on the river Ure, 4¼ miles S E of Askrigg. Acres, 2,000. Real property, £1, 511. Pop., 121. Houses, 25. Newbiggin Hall is the seat of the Yeomans. There is a slightly endowed school.
