Populations of Local Government Districts in 1971.
Approx. number of rows:
1,366
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:

Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1971.

Sources:

  1. These data were transcribed from table 1, 'Estimated and resident population' in 'Great Britain, England and Wales, regions, conurbations, sub-divisions of regions, counties, urban/rural aggregates, local authority areas, conurbation centres, new towns', in the General Report of the 1971 census. NB this is a partial transcription of the table, limited to the ENUMERATED POPULATION. The table also includes data on numbers enumerated in the area but returned as resident elsewhere, on numbers returned as resident in the area but enumerated elsewhere in Great Britain, and on the estimated resident population.
  2. In April 2016 it was discovered that the data for Plymouth and Torbay CBs in Devon were missing. The relevant figures were inserted from the parish table, and will be slightly different as they are NOT rounded to the nearest 0 or 5.

Notes:

  1. These data were input by Andy Bendall at Portsmouth in November 2000 to provide checks and scaling factors for data for 1971 supplied by Danny Dorling, which are based on 1981 wards aggregated up to 1971 LGDs, and are consequently imprecise.
  2. This transcription covers England and Wales only.
  3. This table was previously called pop_lgd_1971 when it was held in Oracle.

Checking:

  1. The list of LGDs was based on a list supplied by Danny Dorling, and all data was checked to ensure that the male and female figures summed to the total. NB many rows (318) failed this absolute requirement, because the computed total differing from the stated figure by -5 or +5. This was clearly due to rounding in the published report.
  2. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit in this table has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this ID can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
