1951 Summary Occupational Statistics for ALL Local Government Districts
Approx. number of rows:
2,940
Table type:
Derived
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. The data are taken from the tables 'occ_1951_lg_t', 'occ_1951_sm_m' and 'occ_1951_sm_f', which contain the raw transcriptions from the 1951 census.

Notes:

  1. This table is limited to the occupational status information and the level 1 occupational categories in the other tables.
  2. NB the limitations of the 'occ_1951_f' table mean that the figures given here for the number of women in certain occupational categories in smaller towns and rural districts are estimates, computed using the figure given in 'other_occ' plus the number of women in the specific occuption in the county as a whole, as given in 'occ_1951_lg_t', less the number in the occupation in the large towns of the county.
  3. Data for administrative counties as a whole and for New Towns are included in the source tables but are excluded here to prevent double counting.

Checking:

  1. Although this is a derived table, extensive checks have been run on it and the necessary changes made to the relevant raw data tables.
  2. That the total aged over 15 equals the sum of 'tot_occ' and 'XXVIII_ret_not_work', for both sexes.
  3. That the total occupied ('tot_occ') equals the sum of 'employers', 'managers', 'operatives', 'selfempl' and 'unempl', for both sexes.
  4. That the total occupied ('tot_occ') equals the sum of all the individual orders I-XXVII (i.e. excluding 'XXVIII_ret_not_work'), for both sexes. For women in small towns, this check uses the number in 'other_occ' rather than the individual occupations for which data are missing.
  5. That the districts listed are identical to those listed for 1951 in 'age_lgd', and that the total populations and the populations aged 15 and over, for both sexes, are identical in the two tables.
  6. In three places, the data have been changed despite their being a correct transcription of the original report, in order to satisfy multiple check sums:
    • The total number of males in XIV_build in Gateshead CB, Durham, was changed from 2320 to 2520 to satisfy check sums for all occupied males in Gateshead and all in Durham for the order.
    • The number of males in XXVI_unskilled in Boston RD, Lincolnshire, was raised from 26 to 126 to satisfy check sums for all occupied males in the RD and all in Lincolnshire Holland for the order. The printed number is unlikely, as it means the RD has fewer in this order than in stationary engines.
    • The number of females in XXIII_clerks in Cardiff RD, Glamorgan, was raised from 227 to 1227 to satisfy check sums for all occupied women in the RD and all in Glamorgan for the order. The printed number is clearly incorrect, as the listed total for the two components of the order that are listed is 1189.
  7. Four other inconsistencies, mostly small, have been inspected but no correction seems possible:
    • The female population of Lewisham LB, London, differs from that given in the 1951 age structure table by 20, but is consistent with other data for the borough.
    • The total number of managers in Rutland differs from that in the four component districts by 10.
    • There is a discrepancy of 1 between the total for occupied males in Birmingham CB and the total of the orders, and in the Warwickshire totals for VII_textile.
    • There is a discrepancy of 10 between the total number of occupied women in Halesowen, Worcestershire, and the sum of the status categories, and between the number of female managers reported for Worcestershire and the total for the districts in the county.
  8. This leaves three or four problems in the 'orders' and other totals: Inconsistencies of -1 and 1 in the male county totals for VI_metals and XXVI_unskilled for Essex, which may be a single problem. An inconsistency of 20 in the female county total for 'retired' for London. An inconsistency of 90 in the male county total for 'XXVIII_ret_not_work' for the West Riding. Lastly, there are ten inconsistencies in the county totals for more specific occupations: Of 82 in the male county total for 'XXIII_890_other_clerks' in Hampshire. Of -2 in the female county total for 'XVIII_730_shop_ass' in Lancashire. Of 4990 in the male county total for 'XIX_780_teachers' in Lancashire. Of 18 in the female county total for 'XXII_862_hotel_own' in London. Of -262 in the female county total for 'XVIII_730_shop_ass' in London. Of -6 in the male county total for 'IX_383_tailors' in London. Of 878 in the male county total for 'XXIII_890_other_clerks' in Middlesex. Of -2 in the female county total for 'XXII_862_hotel_own' in Surrey. Of -10 in the female county total for 'XXII_862_hotel_own' in West Sussex. Of 1 in the female county total for 'XXII_862_hotel_own' in Worcestershire. Identifying possible correction requires manual inspection of the relevant columns for all individual LGDs in these counties.
