Occupational Matrix for ICEM data

Table ID:
ICEM_OCC_CODEBOOK     (6565589)
Contents:
Occupational Matrix for ICEM data
Approx. number of rows:
797
Table type:
Codebook
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. This meta-data file "Occupational Matrix" was downloaded in spreadsheet format on the 26th November 2015 from the website of the Integrated Census Microdata (I-CeM) project based at the University of Essex. http://www.essex.ac.uk/history/research/ICeM/documentation.html

Notes:

  1. This table covers England, Wales and Scotland 1851-1911.
  2. The I-CeM guide notes that much of the occupational coding was done automatically by a program and there may still be errors contained within the data.
  3. The I-CeM Introduction to the Occupational Matrix describes the arrangement of occupational headings in a three part structure: sub-orders, within orders within classes. Although classes were not used from 1881 onwards the structure remained in the headings. In 1881 a finer level of detail to sub-orders was also introduced. Thus a single row in the table will identify a numeric value indicating the order, sub-order and (from 1881 onwards) detail for individual occupational groupings for each Census for the stated year in the relevant column. For example occcode 029 is the row for "Roman Catholic Priests". Columns in this row for EW_1851, S_1851, EW_1861, S_1861, EW_1871 and S_1871 all contain the code value 0301 where sub-order 1 = "Clergymen" and order 3 = "Persons engaged in the learned professions or engaged in literature". Columns EW_1881, EW_1891, EW_1901 and EW_1911 contain code 030102 where detail 2 = Roman Catholic priest, while the Scottish columns change the detail number for Catholic priests over time.
  4. A star character was removed from the NAPP_HISCO3 column for row 543 as it was causing the data loading to fail.
