Sources:

  1. This meta-data file "Disability dictionary" was downloaded in spreadsheet format on the 26th November 2015 from the website of the Integrated Census Microdata (I-CeM) project based at the University of Essex. http://www.essex.ac.uk/history/research/ICeM/documentation.html

Notes:

  1. This table covers England and Wales 1851-1861 and 1881-1911 and Scotland 1851-1901.
  2. Binary numeric code identifying marital condition used within the Icem project are as follows: 1 = visual impairment, 2 = dumb and hearing impairment, 3 = idiocy and imbecility, 4 = lunacy, 5 = other disabilities, 6 = information relating to duration of disability, and 7 = information relating to severity of disability. For exmple, blind, dumb and lunatic would be coded 1101000.
  3. The I-CeM guide notes that the conj may have been altered automatically by a program and the "marinf" code will be set to "1" where this is true.
  4. The I-CeM spreadsheet contained a row where the disability value is given as "#NAME?". This obviously is a formula function error in the spreadsheet. However, as this is a look-up table and we do not have the full dataset we do not know what the value should be and therefore cannot correct the error
