Housing Statistics (persons per room) from the 1931 Scottish Census.
Approx. number of rows:
75
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. This table is a partial transcription of table 26 ('Houses: Number of Rooms by Number of Persons') in the individual county reports of the 1931 Census for Scotland.

Notes:

  1. These data were entered by Rachel Granville in Portsmouth in Autumn 2002.
  2. A partial transciption of these tables were entered to give as accurate a match as possible to the England and Wales data. All columns were entered apart from the individual number of private families occupying 5, 6 to 7, 8 to 9, and 10 or more rooms and all columns which can be calculated using transcribed data, i.e. total persons in private houses against number of persons per room, also total occupied private houses in 1921, total persons in private houses in 1931 and 1921, number of private houses without sub-lets and percentage of these out of all private houses against number of rooms.
  3. The data covers counties, cities and some burghs, as indicated by area_type:
    • County (33 areas): Includes data for all burghs, whether or not separately listed, but not data for Cities.
    • City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
    • Large Burgh (20 areas): These match those listed in the 1931 Industry Table.
    • Small Burgh (14 areas).
  4. Note given on the table 'Institutions and other large establishments, with their populations, are excluded from Tables 26-29. Additional information in regard to the sub-letting of Houses will be found in Table 30.
  5. Note given on the table for cities 'The 1921 figures are for the area of the City as at the Census of 1931.'
  6. The 'over_1', 'over_1_5' and 'over_2' fields were computed by us from the data. Our calculations assume that tenements occupied by '15 or more' persons contained 15 people, and are therefore obviously underestimates.
  7. The field 'tot_u5' was not transcribed, but computed from the totals for families occupying, 2, 3 and 4 rooms after the data had been loaded.
  8. The rows giving totals for the 4 cities have been duplicated and added to the table again as data for the burghs of the same name. This is to ensure consistency in the mapping on A Vision of Britain through Time. Please ignore these rows for all other purposes.

Checking:

  1. The data was checked in excel to ensure the total number of private houses matched the combined figure of private houses with the same number of rooms where the number of rooms equalled 1, 2, 3 or 4 i.e. r1_tot=r1_p1+r1_p2...
  2. The same check was done to ensure the total number of private families (tot_pfam) matched the combined total of families in each house.
  3. The total number of private families was also checked against the sum of the totals for each house with a different number of rooms i.e.r1_tot+r2_tot...
  4. The total number of houses with 1 sub-let was compared against the sum of houses with 1 sub-let with different number of rooms. The same was done for 2 or more sub-lets, but this could only check the total was not less than the combined sum.
  5. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
