Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. This table is a transcription of table 11 ('Private Families, classified by size of family, rooms occupied, and density of occupation. Administrative county, county boroughs, municipal boroughs, urban and rural districts') in the individual county reports of the 1931 census. All columns were entered apart from the number of private families occupying 5, 6 to 7, 8 to 9, and 10 or more rooms.

Notes:

  1. This table is similar to the 1901 table but is based around the concept of the 'private family' rather than the 'tenement.' The exact definition of a 'private family' is not given but a note says that it is included in Table 3 of the 1931 printed reports.
  2. The header information on the table notes that 'Where more than one family are enumerated within a structurally separate dwelling, each is classified according to the rooms it severally occupies and not to the total number of rooms in the dwelling. For this purpose rooms shared by more than one family are excluded, as are sculleries or bathrooms, etc., each family being classified to the next lower integral number of rooms occupied, save in the exceptional case of a family housed in a portion of a room only when it is classified as living in 1 room'. It goes on to note that this may result in differences when comparing the number of rooms from this table to the number of rooms from other tables.
  3. The 'over_1', 'over_1_5' and 'over_2' fields were computed by us from the data. Our calculations assume that tenements occupied by '15 or more' persons contained 15 people, and are therefore obviously underestimates.
  4. The field 'tot_u5' was not transcribed, but computed from the totals for families occupying, 2, 3 and 4 rooms after the data had been loaded.
  5. This table was originally called hous1931 and was a combination of the English and Welsh data. This was amended in February 2010 and is now called hous_1931_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content.

Checking:

  1. As the data were loaded, the total for each number of private families was checked against the sum of the number of private families occupying that number of rooms with 1 person, with 2 etc., (i.e. r1_tot was compared with r1_p1+r1_p2...r1_p15up). These data should be substantially free from error.
  2. The 'tot_pfam' field was checked against the 'rooms' and 'av_den' fields as the data were entered and again should be error free.
  3. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
