Housing Amenity and Tenure statistics from the Census redistricted into 2011 Local Authority Districts
Approx. number of rows:
3,010
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1951 to 2011.
Dates and times are identified by:
   Year

Sources:

  1. This table was generated from data held in the following tables from the Census:
    • hcond_2011_gb_heat
    • hcond_1991_gb_ward
    • hcond_1971_ew
    • hcond_1971_s
    • hcond_1951_s
    • hcond_1951_ew
. Data has been rearranged into columns containing counts.
  2. The table covers England, Wales and Scotland.

Notes:

  1. All counts currently held here are for numbers of households. Counts of numbers of persons in households are available for some but not all years. These often appear as cross-tabulations against tenure type, but here we include separate counts of tenure type.
  2. The source tables contain a wide range of variables, but there are large differences between censuses in which "amenities" were recorded. The 1951 report includes data on cooking facilities. This table therefore contains only a small subset of possible variables, limited to those which can usefully be compared between years. However, note that a direct comparison over the full period 1951-2011 is simply impossible, because the 2011 census gathered data only on Central Heating, which was not reported at all in 1951 or 1971.
  3. The one variable reported here for all years is the number of households with "All Amenities", but this unavoidably varies between years:
    • 1951: Households with exclusive use of piped water, a cooking stove, a kitchen sink, a Water Closet and a fixed bath.
    • 1971: Households with exclusive use of hot water, fixed bath and inside water closet.
    • 1991: Households with exclusive use of a bath or shower, inside WC and with central heating in all or some rooms.
    • 2011: "Household Spaces" with any kind of central heating.
  4. Data on tenure type is included from 1961 onwards, but what is held here has to be simpler than what is listed in any specific year due to variations in what was reported. See the detailed documentation of the columns, but note in particular that households renting from Housing Associations have to be included in the general "rented" category, rather than with council housing in a "social housing" category, because in 1971 they were included with those renting unfurnished property from private landlords.
