Contents:
Households' access to water supplies, washing facilities etc. in Scotland in 1971
Approx. number of rows:
2,634
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. The information is taken from table 25, 'Enumerated households by tenure and household amenities' for either 'County of city, city wards' or 'County, local authority areas' in the County Reports of the 1971 Census for Scotland.
  2. The data were entered by Rachel Granville in Portsmouth in Summer 2002.

Notes:

  1. This table contains data on the access of households to hot water supply, fixed bath or shower, inside or outside flush water closet and whether that access was shared. It covers a variety of tyoes of area, and for each area breaks the data down by tenure type, so when using the data rows should be selected using the columns area_type and tenure_type.
  2. The table contains data for six types of area, identified by values of 'area_type'. The reports for the Cities also contained data by Ward, but they are not included in the transcription:
    • CT = City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
    • DC = District of County (194 areas).
    • LB = Large Burgh (23 areas): Other main towns.
    • LW = Landward (32 areas): Remainders of counties. WE NEED TO CLARIFY THEIR COMPOSITION.
    • NT = New Town (5 areas): Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Glenrothes, Irvine and Livingston.
    • SB = Small Burgh (176 areas).
  3. The following values of tenure_type appear in the data. All areas have data for all tenure types:
    • ALL: All tenures, i.e. overall totals for area.
    • OWN: Owner-Occupier.
    • CNCL: Rented from a council or new town.
    • UNFU: Rented unfurnished from a private landlord or housing association.
    • FURN: Rented furnished.
    • NS: Not stated.
  4. The tables are restricted to households of which at least one member was present at the Census.
  5. The tables are rounded to multiples of five, so the check sums do not always match precisely. Zero represents the figures 0, 1, 2 and quantities less than half a unit.
  6. The rows giving totals for the 4 cities has been duplicated and added to the table again as data for the burghs of the same name. This is to ensure consistency in the mapping on A Vision of Britain through Time. Please ignore these rows for all other purposes.

Checking:

  1. The total number of households was checked by totalling the different types of household tenure and comparing with the total tenure for each unit in the original table.
  2. For each type of tenure the number of households with no hot water supply was added to those with exclusive and shared use of it then compared to the total number of households for that type of tenure in the original table.
  3. For each type of tenure the number of households with no fixed bath or shower was added to those with exclusive or shared use of one. The total was then compared to the total number of houses for that type of tenure in the original table
  4. For each type of tenure the number of households with no access to a water closet was added to those with either exclusive or shared use of one inside or outside. The total was then compared to the total number of houses for that type of tenure in the original table
  5. The number of households with exclusive use of hot water, a fixed bath or shower and an inside water closet was turned into a percentage of the total number of households for each type of household tenure. This percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  6. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
