Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. The information is taken from table 25, 'Enumerated households by tenure and household amenities' for 'Administrative County, local authority areas, conurbation centres and new towns' in the County Reports of the 1971 Census for England and Wales.

Notes:

  1. The transcription covers the local government districts for the whole of England and Wales and was entered in Portsmouth in Spring and Autumn 2001. It gives information on the access of households to hot water supply, fixed bath or shower, inside or outside flush water closet and whether that access was shared.
  2. The tables are restricted to households of which at least one member was present at the Census.
  3. The tables are rounded to multipies of five, thus the check sums do not always match precisely. Zero represents the figures 0, 1, 2 and quantities less than half a unit.
  4. This table was originally called hcond_1971. It was amended in January 2010 to be hcond_1971_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content

Checking:

  1. The total number of households was checked by totalling the different types of household tenure and comparing with the total tenure for each local government district in the original table.
  2. For each type of tenure the number of households with no hot water supply was added to those with exclusive and shared use of it then compared to the total number of households for that type of tenure in the original table.
  3. For each type of tenure the number of households with no fixed bath or shower was added to those with exclusive or shared use of one. The total was then compared to the total number of houses for that type of tenure in the original table
  4. For each type of tenure the number of households with no access to a water closet was added to those with either exclusive or shared use of one inside or outside. The total was then compared to the total number of houses for that type of tenure in the original table
  5. The number of households with exclusive use of hot water, a fixed bath or shower and an inside water closet was turned into a percentage of the total number of households for each type of household tenure. This percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  6. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
  7. Those geographical unit names that did not matched straightforwardly during the cross-checking were double checked against the original tables to verify the transcription accuracy and corrections made accordingly.
