Sources:

  1. The information is taken from table 23 'Private Households by availability of certain Household arrangements' by county, local authority areas, conurbation centres and new towns in the 1961 Census for England and Wales.

Notes:

  1. The information covers all the local government districts in England and Wales and was entered in Portsmouth. It gives information on the access of households to a cold water and hot water taps, fixed bath, water closet and if that access was shared.
  2. The shared facilities for Brierfield UD did not contain any information on the original table for the total of shared households.
  3. This table was originally called hcond_1961. It was amended in January 2010 to be hcond_1961_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content

Checking:

  1. The number of households with use of a shared cold water tap was turned into a percentage of the total number of households then this percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  2. The number of households without use of a cold water tap was turned into a percentage of the total number of households then this percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  3. The number of households with use of a shared hot water tap was turned into a percentage of the total number of households then this percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  4. The number of households without use of a shared hot water tap was turned into a percentage of the total number of households then this percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  5. The number of households with shared use of a fixed bath was turned into a percentage of the total number of households then this percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  6. The number of households without use of a fixed bath was turned into a percentage of the total number of households then this percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  7. The number of households with shared use of a water closet was turned into a percentage of the total number of households then this percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  8. The number of households without use of a water closet was turned into a percentage of the total number of households then this percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  9. The number of households with exclusive use of all four arrangements was turned into a percentage of the total number of households then this percentage figure was checked against the percentage figures given in the original table.
  10. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
  11. Those geographical unit names that did not matched straightforwardly during the cross-checking were double checked against the original tables to verify the transcription accuracy and corrections made accordingly.
