Contents:
Private households' access to water supplies, etc in Scotland
Approx. number of rows:
712
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1881 to 1911.

Sources:

  1. The information is taken from table 26, 'Household Arrangements', in the County Reports of the 1951 Census of Scotland.

Notes:

  1. The information covers the whole of Scotland and was entered in Portsmouth by Rachel Granville in Summer 2002. It gives information on whether the households had access to piped water, kitchen sinks, fixed baths, water closets and cooking stoves and if so, whether that access was exclusive or shared.
  2. The table contains data for seven types of area, identified by values of 'dist_type'. All areas of four of these types have been consistently matched to the AUO:
    • CO = County (33 areas): overall totals, including Landwards and Burghs, but not the four cities.
    • CT = City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
    • BU = Burgh (191 areas): Other main towns.
    • LD = Landward (32 areas): Remainders of counties, excluding the Burghs.
These area types have not been matched to the AUO:
    • POR = Portion: (6 areas) district = INSULAR or MAINLAND, in Argyll, Inverness-shire and Ross and Cromarty. For Argyll and for Ross and Cromarty landward figures are also given. For Inverness-shire, no landward totals are given in the published report, but we have added them to the data held here by summing the Mainland and Insular data (a note to the mainland data says that they exclude the burghs).
    • WD = ward: (84 areas) Sub-divisions within each of the four cities.
Previously there was an area type incorrectly labelled as CNTY in Kirkcudbright. this has been corrected to "BU".
  3. The data contain two rows for all but one area: data for 'All Households' (h_type = 'A') and data for 'Households Sharing Dwellings' (h_type = 'S'). The exception is New Galloway Burgh in the county of Kirkcudbright, which had no information on shared households in the original table.
  4. The rows giving totals for the 4 cities has been duplicated and added to the table again as data for the burghs of the same name. This is to ensure consistency in the mapping on A Vision of Britain through Time. Please ignore these rows for all other purposes.

Checking:

  1. Checks were not possible on individual rows as no totals were given. Checks were possible on columns by adding the shared and total figures for the county together and comparing against the the computed total for the sum of the burghs and landwards. This worked for all counties except Bute where no landward information was given in the table, but the figures were checked and found to be correct.
