This section of the database contains gazetteers which have been developed to standardise the names of administrative units and link data for these units to the GIS. NB gazetteers closely linked with particular data tables are documented in the same section as the tables they relate to; this applies, for example, to gazetteers of trade union branches. In the longer term, we are developing a new gazetteer system which will contain more systematic information on hierarchies of units and provide place-name authority lists. However, the intention is that the system will always contain tables with the same names and basic structure that are documented here, but these will increasingly be 'views' of the new gazetteer system.
