PLOMESGATE, a district and a hundred in the S E of Suffolk. The district comprehends the sub-district of Earl-Soham, containing the parishes of Earl-Soham, Kenton, Brandeston, Kettleburgh, Cretingham, Monewden, and Hoo; the sub-district of Framlingham, containing the parishes of Framlingham, Parham, Easton, and Letheringham; the sub-district of wickham-Market, containing the parishes of Wickham-Market, Hacheston, Marlesford, Campsey-Ash, Blaxhall, Rendlesham, and Eyke; the sub-district of Orford, containing the parishes of Orford, Sudbourne, Iken, Tunstall, Wantisden, Chillesford, and Butley, and the extra-parochial tracts of Havergate-Island, and Gedgrave; the sub-district of Aldeburgh, containing the parishes of Aldeburgh, Hazlewood, Friston, Snape, Sternfield, Benhall, Farnham, and Stratford, St. Andrew; and the sub-district of Saxmundham, containing the parishes of Saxmundham, Rendham, Swefling, Bruisyard, Cransford, Great Glemham, and Little Glemham. Marriages in 1863, 150; births, 681, of which 55 were illegitimate; deaths, 397, of which124 were at ages under 5 years, and 27 at ages above 85. Marriages in the ten years 1851-60, 1, 408; births, 6, 430; deaths, 4, 200. The places of worship, in 1851, were 40 of the Church of England, with 8, 379 sittings; 7 of Independents, with 2, 141 s.; 7 of Baptists, with 1, 271 s.; 7 of Wesleyans, with 1, 136 s.; 2 of Primitive Methodists, with 303 s.; and 1 undefined, with 100 s. The schools were 24 public day-schools, with 1, 714 scholars; 53 private day-schools, with 1, 104 s.; 39 Sunday schools, with 2, 586 s.; and 3 evening schools for adults, with 89 s. The workhouse is in Wickham-Market; and, at the census of 1861, had 133 inmates. The hundred comprehends only the Aldeburgh and Saxmundham sub-districts, six parishes of Orford sub-district, and one in each of two other sub-districts. Acres, 45, 389.
