Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Openshaw

Openshaw, town and township, Manchester par., SE. Lancashire, on SE. side of Manchester, 3½ miles from the Exchange, 579 ac., pop. 16,153; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. The Manchester and Stockport Canal passes here. The mfr. of railway carriages and of locomotive and other engines are important industries. Dyeing, brew-ing, ironfounding, engineering, cotton mfrs., chemical mfrs., &c., are other employments.
