The Vision of Britain system holds the full text of three 19th century descriptive gazetteers, a total of over 90,000 entries:

  • John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England & Wales (1872)
  • Frances Groome's The Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland (1885)
  • John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles (1887)

You can search either the place-names that appear at the start of the entries, and sometimes as variant names within the text, or for words within the full text of each entry. Place-name searches can include asterisks ('*') to match characters you are not sure of, or look for 'sound-alikes'. Searches may be narrowed by area (nation or county) or by type (based on the ADL Feature Type Thesaurus). Place-name searches for exact matches are much the quickest.
