The 1831 census was the first to provide some information about individual occupations, but was also the last not to be based on a detailed door-to-door survey: it still relied heavily on the network of parish priests, but they seem to have been diligent in gathering this information. The available data cover males over 20 only. This rate covers the percentage in three of the nine original 1831 categories, "Occupiers employing Labourers", "Occupiers not employing Labourers", and "Agricultural Labourers". As such, it seems to be a pretty good measure of how far each area's economy depended on agriculture.
