The reporting of orchards by the Agricultural Censuses is problematic, partly because the land below fruit trees could be used for other purposes, including grazing and the growing of soft fruit. Unlike woodland, the area of orchards is usually included within the total area of farmland but counted entirely or partly in terms of how the ground underneath is used, so these figures are an attempt to create a consistent count of all land used as orchard, but must be used with care.
