Text:
Arable or tilled land, fallow, rotation grass, and market gardens. This category specifically included fields planted with grass as part of a crop rotation, as distinct from permanent grass, but Stamp told Alice Coleman, Director of the Second Land Utilisation Survey in the 1960s, that this distinction was not always made correctly, partly because the Survey was carried out in a period when much arable land was being converted into permanent grassland. Market gardens, but not ordinary gardens or allotments, were also to be included as 'arable'. These areas are coloured brown on the published maps.
