Variable : Agricultural Census Categories for Pasture

Variables serve as the dimensions of nCubes, and are generally based on the questions on forms such as the census schedule. However, in the aggregate data held in the Vision of Britain system we do not store the individual responses but counts of the number of each kind of response, so variables are made up of categories, such as age groups.

Identifier:
V_AGCEN_GRASS_GEN
Name:
Agricultural Census Categories for Pasture
Type:
Variable (V)
Text:
In some years, the Agricultural Census divided the acreage of permanent pasture, either in terms of 'for hay' and 'not for hay', or in terms of 'for mowing' or 'for grazing'. With the obvious proviso that in more recent years mown grass could be used for feed without being turned into hay, we treat these distinctions as equivalent. This simple two-way division of grassland is much the most common, and we map other more complex classifications to it.
