nCube : Pasture Use, as reported by the Agricultural Census

nCubes hold all the statistics presented by the Vision of Britain system, and are defined as combinations of variables. For example, the age-sex tables that appear in most census reports are held as two-dimensional nCubes in which one dimension is a variable categorising sex and the other variable defines a set of age groups. nCubes can have many dimensions, such as age by sex by occupation by cause of death, or just one.

In certain years, the Agricultural Census divided the acreage of Permanent Pasture by usage. In 1871, 1891-1901 and 1921-31 it was divided into 'for hay' and 'not for hay'. In 1940-41 it was divided into 'for hay' and 'for grazing'. In 1950-70 it was divided into 'for mowing' and 'for grazing'. 'For hay' is included here with 'for mowing', and 'not for hay' with 'for grazing'. The Scottish Farm Census used some more complex classifications of permanent grass, and in 1961 did not identify 'rotation grasses' but sub-divided grassland into over and under seven years old; these classifications have been mapped to this simpler form.

Pasture Use, as reported by the Agricultural Census: Data map listing

Each of our datasets, or nCubes, combines one or more variables (Var) each of which consists of a set of categories. The data map lists all the possible combinations of categories. The cell references are the identifiers held in our main table of statistics, recording what each number measures.

Cell Reference Var Category Value
AGCEN_GRASS_GEN:for_mowing 1 For mowing/for hay
AGCEN_GRASS_GEN:for_grazing 1 For grazing/not for hay
